Gill was born in London, and did a fair amount of travelling when young, with her youth orchestra and with friends some acquired through music. Reading, writing and playing music jockeyed for attention, and after a career teaching first reading in London, then for a long period cello in Wales, she took up writing of both words and music in retirement in Orkney, off the northern coast of Scotland.
Her first published book is a collection of stories for adult cellists, incorporating a lot of historical information. Celtic tunes, lullabies and carols for cellists, a collection of stories about Orkney and Orcadians through the ages, and an audio book of Mellow Cello are all looking for publishers currently.
