…by any other name?

Write down your full name. Answer these questions:

– Do you like your name? Have you always liked it?

– Do you know what each part means?

– Do you know why that name was chosen for you?

– Do you have any nicknames? Were they chosen by you or by others?

– How has your name, or nickname, shaped your life?

– Have you ever changed any of your names? If you changed it now, what would you choose, and why?

Read through what you’ve written. Did it give you any different slant on your identity and your sense of belonging – on who you think you are? on how others may view you? on what may be in your power to change?

Now take a character from your work in progress. Carry out the same exercise on their behalf. Has it deepened your insight into what makes them tick?

Would a rose by any other name smell as sweet?
