Nothing comes across like an Acrostic.

I first wrote an acrostic in 2017 at the age of 72, when it was a writing exercise used by a local writing group to celebrate the 200th year of the official decree of Stromness as a burgh of Barony, (something like being awarded town status and collecting taxes). Some people used the last letters of each line, some the first, and a few a random sprinkling of letters amongst the lines, (the last of which seems like cheating and taking the easy way out to me).
We took all the street names of Stromness town centre and between the group made acrostics on all of them. These were pinned to a wall-painted map of the town streets in a local art gallery, and also produced as a book for sale.
The pandemic stultified many people’s activities and imaginations, but musicians and writers seemed to cope well with the isolation – it is something we are all used to when writing, composing, practising, or I guess, painting or drawing or sculpting.
I decided to use the time writing poetry and stories initially, and later on writing and arranging music for cellists. Out of it came one acrostic I’d forgotten entirely about, until Sue, a friend and fellow Pens Around the World member, prompted a memory of it:

Fabric fashioned into masks,

attached around your head,

covered mouth, nose, chin,

ears aching from elastic.

Can’t clearly hear what’s said

or read the lips behind the mask

venture out to get some food-

every time wash out that mask,

remain at home it’s safer-

is it good to isolate? –

no time spent with family or

going out with friends: just

silence.

Here are some possible starting letters you could use for a pandemic acrostic:
Covid lockdown, Pandemic, Self isolation, Coronavirus, Quarantine, Shielding, Mask, Support bubble, Social distancing, Respiratory distress.
Or you could be even more topical and use Ukraine or some other aspect of the conflict as a starter.
If you don’t want to try a poem, how about a short story either about the pandemic, or about the conflict in Ukraine?
Go on, have a go, and post as comments to this post.
