In a recent post on my blog The Writer is a Lonely Hunter, I asked whether AI is such a bad thing for writers. I had used ChatGPT to plan an itinerary for a forthcoming trip to New Zealand and found the results very helpful. So, in moving forward with this resource, I turned to the internet again for inspiration to share a writing prompt with you. In a previous post, I suggested you use a random word generator to spark ideas for writing a poem or short piece of fiction. This time, I discovered a writing prompt generator which gives a synopsis for a story or longer work. The first part of the process requires you to select a genre. You can find romance, fantasy and science fiction prompts together with a number of sub-genres, some of which I’ve never heard of. I don’t find the genre mundane science fiction terribly inspiring and am perplexed by the biopunk science fiction category. But putting those aside, I selected the comedy romance genre, where 36 prompts were generated, each including an image of the main character.
It was fun to browse the suggested storylines and although a piece of writing may or may not materialise as a result, I might pick and choose bits and pieces to develop a narrative. The site also lets you choose alternative AI generated prompts and characters. Could this be a useful way of engaging with AI as a writer? Why don’t you give it a go?
